How does the app actually find me work?
You create a profile, list your skills and the kind of work you’re looking for, then mark yourself as “available.” (or Temporarily Busy). If you drive into an employer’s set radius and your skills match their job listing, the employer gets a notification. If they like the look of your profile, they can send you a notification saying they want to call. Ten minutes later, the call button will appear so they can ring you directly.
Developer Tip: Use the “about me” dialog to make your profile suit what jobs you are wanting hired for. Simply adding honest and reliable is probably not going to do you much favours, however explaining the previous experiance and skills you can bring to the position is more likely to attract the employers attention (think of it as a cover letter). But do not put personal information in this field such as contact details etc
The app is designed to be a set-and-forget tool. Just set up your profile and job wish list, save the details, and toggle “Available” or “Temporarily Busy” on the map screen. Then sit back and let opportunities come to you. however, with this Web version please see the limitations section below.
If I mark myself as “Temporarily Busy” does that mean im invisable and won’t be contacted ?
No, marking yourself as “Temporarily Busy” only indicates to the employer that you are still available but maybe not just right now. IE: You’re working for another 3 weeks then your free. So you may still get contacted. Marking yourself as invisable will hide yourself from ALL employers.
Why is there a ten minute delay before an employer can call me?
As a full-time traveller myself, I often don’t answer unknown calls and might be in the middle of driving when one comes through. The ten-minute delay is so that you:
Know that someone is about to call you via the Nomadic Worker app.
Have time to pull over and prepare for the conversation.
Do I need to keep the app open all the time?
No. but as per the limitations section below, you will need to periodically open the app in order to get fresh data. Sadly this is a restriction with web based apps
Can I switch between being an Employee and an Employer?
Yes. You can delete your in-app account and sign back up as the other role without any issue. Alternatively, you can use a secondary email account to keep both roles active.
Will it drain my battery?
The app uses location services, so there will be some battery use, but as a web based app it will use no more battery than a normal web page does
Do I need internet or will it work offline?
You’ll need an internet connection (mobile data or Wi-Fi) because the app periodically talks to the server to match you with employers.
Explain the location permissions to me.
As an Employee, location permissions are required to update your marker as you travel. The app uses “offsets your actual location,” which means it records a rough GPS fix that may be 3km or more from your exact spot. This way, your precise location is never pinpointed.
The app runs a foreground service that updates your location once every 10 – 15 minutes, which helps save the battery and updates your location so you can trigger a nearby employers attention. However, This web app version will only run that service if the app is open and visable.
If you choose to not allow location permissions while using the app, please be aware this is a core functionality and without it you will not be found by an employer.
If I see an employer on the map, can I contact them?
No. The app is designed with the employer’s privacy in mind. Your goal is to make your profile complete and attractive so that when you enter their radius, it’s them who reaches out to you.
If I choose every job and every category at once will i increase my chances of being hired ?
No, you cant do that, to prevent abuse the app limits you to only choosing a maximum of 5 categories at any one time.
For Employers (Farmers, Businesses, Roadhouses, etc.)
How do I advertise a job?
Create an account, log in as an Employer, and add the jobs you’re hiring for. Set the radius around your location where you want to be alerted if a matching Employee passes by.
Can someone see my location and just call up to my property?
No. The app is designed with the employer’s privacy in mind. Nobody wants hundreds of random drive-ins. To prevent this, your map marker is placed randomly within a 50 km radius of your actual property. This keeps your exact location private.
Can someone randomly contact me via the app?
No. Your privacy is important. Employees can’t see your phone number or email. Those details are only shared when you choose to call an employee through the app.
What happens when someone drives into my radius?
You’ll get a notification saying there’s a potential worker nearby who matches your job listing (if the app is open). You can then view their profile and, if you’re interested, call them directly.
Please read the limitations section below for clarity on notifications
Do I have to keep checking the app?
No not entirely, but on this Web App version it is recommended to randomly check the map screen due to web app limitations (Please read the limitations section below ). Once you’ve set up your jobs and radius, the app notifies you automatically when a match is nearby.
I don’t see any Markers on the map other than myself.
1. Employee markers are removed from the map if you are “Not Hiring”, they only show when you are “Hiring”
2. If you have no markers in your specified radius but you do see a +300 or some other number in the top right of your screen, that means there are 300 matching employee’s in the country but they are just not in your radius yet, either increase your radius to view them or wait until they travel closer to you.
But what if I want to hire someone who is outside my radius ?
The maximum search radius is 2,000 km. Hiding employees beyond that radius is a deliberate safety measure to limit scraping and unsolicited contact.
What kinds of jobs can I list?
The app comes with predefined categories and positions that you can select from. If you don’t see the position you’re hiring for, you can suggest a new one via the Settings tab. The developer will review and approve (or deny) the addition.
Categories and positions are the same for both Employers and Employees, so the app can match them directly.
Do I have to pay workers through the app?
No. Nomadic Worker is simply a connection tool. Payment, terms, and arrangements are worked out directly between you and the worker.
Can I use this outside of Australia?
Yes. While it was inspired by remote Australian travel, the app can be used anywhere in the world.
What do the icons mean?
A green icon means the potential employee is available for work and actively looking.
A red icon means the employee is unavailable at the moment, but still seeking work. They might be on a short-term job, so they could be available soon.
The “pair of eyes” icon shows employees whose profile you’ve already viewed.
A heart icon marks an employee you’ve favourited.
Explain the location permissions.
As an Employer, location permissions are only required when you set your initial marker on the map. After that, no more location updates are needed from your phone.
Your foreground service is different from an Employee’s. It simply runs to check for Employees entering your radius and to send you notifications (if the app is open). If you close the app, you won’t be notified unless you’re actively using the app.
Will I get multiple notifications if someone enters and exits the radius daily?
No. To avoid spam, the app is designed to limit this. If someone lives on the edge of your radius, you’ll only get one notification from them every 5 days. After that, they’re removed from your database, and only if they re-enter after the cooldown will you get another alert.

Are there limitations with using the Web App?
This app is fully functional on iOS without requiring an iOS app from the App Store. It’s browser-based, which means you can use it immediately without downloads. However, web browsers have some built-in limitations:
1. Push Notifications
Notifications may not always appear reliably, especially when the app is closed or your device is in power-saving mode. This is a browser limitation – mobile browsers aggressively manage background processes to save battery, which can prevent notifications from being delivered.
Also note that especially on iOS, notifications WILL NOT work unless you install the app to your home screen ( click the provided button in the top right of the web app that says “install app” )
What this means:
Desktop/Laptop: Notifications work reliably ✅
Mobile (backgrounded): Notifications may be delayed or missed ⚠️
2. Background Location Updates
Your location won’t automatically update in the background like a native Android or iOS app. Browsers restrict background location access for privacy and battery reasons.
What this means:
Location only updates when the app is open and in use
⚠️ You’ll need to manually open the app periodically to refresh your position as an employee
3. Workaround for Best Experience
To ensure you don’t miss opportunities, we recommend:
As an Employer:
Open the app periodically to check for new workers in your area via the map page
You’ll receive notifications when the app is open
As an Employee:
Open the app regularly to update your location
This ensures employers can see your current position
⚠️ Browers by default will place restrictions on certain aspects of a Web app if it is NOT installed to your home screen. Please visit the app.nomadicworker.org and click the “install app” button to allow full functionality.
Some browers such as “Brave” and “firefox” are also very tight on their policies for allowing certain functionality. As a result some things such as notifications and location updates may not be reliable on those browsers. recommendation is to open app.nomadicworker.org using chrome, safari, edge or some other browser other than brave and firefox
Want 100% reliability? Download our native Android app for:
✅ Guaranteed push notifications (even when app is closed)
✅ Automatic background location updates
✅ Better battery optimization
✅ Faster performance
Final Note: Regardless if you are an employee or an employer… if you find a match and hire or get hired…. feel free to drop the developer an email, he would love to hear the success stories.
