Why No Native iOS App?
Fair question! Here's the honest breakdown of what it would take.
The Reality of iOS Development:
Hardware Requirements
I'd need to buy a Mac ($600-$2000+) since iOS development ONLY works on macOS. As an Android/Linux user, that's a significant investment just to get started.
Annual Fees
Apple charges $99 USD per year for their Developer Program. This isn't optional—you can't publish to the App Store without it, and it renews every single year.
Testing Devices
I'd need to purchase an iPhone (and ideally multiple devices for different screen sizes) to properly test the app. The simulator isn't enough for real-world testing.
Learning Curve
Swift is a completely different language and ecosystem from what I currently work with. We're talking months of learning before I could build something of quality.
Apple's 30% Cut
Any in-app purchases or subscriptions go through Apple, who takes 30% (15% for smaller developers like me). That means higher prices for you!
Total Upfront Investment: $1,000 - $3,000+
...before writing a single line of code.
"Why Not Just Hire Someone?"
Professional iOS development for an app of this complexity would cost $20,000-$40,000+ and take 3-6 months. The Progressive Web App provides the same features, works perfectly on iOS Safari, and cost a fraction to develop. Plus, keeping development costs down means we can keep subscription prices low for everyone!
Future Plans: Once we see strong demand and revenue that justifies the investment, I can absolutely revisit a native iOS app. But for now, the PWA lets us reach everyone without forcing me to buy into an entire ecosystem I don't personally use.
